About the City of Lisbon

lisbon-sunset.jpg

Lisbon, Europe’s second-oldest capital, lies on the north bank of the river Tejo, on the European Atlantic coast. The city spreads across the slopes of seven hills and down to the ocean and offers breath-taking views from the ‘miradouros’ or viewpoints.

Lisbon is a historic capital, a potpourri of unusual character and charm, where 800 years of cultural influences mingle with modern trends and life styles creating spectacular contrasts. There are so many things to see and do in Lisbon that visitors have access to a wide array of different experiences.

A friendly and very tolerant city by tradition thanks to centuries of cross culture influences from around the world, Lisbon makes people feel at home. Lisbon’s cultural diversity, fascinating architecture and relaxing atmosphere make it one of the most enjoyable cities in Europe.

Discover a charming visual time-warp with vintage trams and medieval village-like neighborhoods  which can still be experienced at its most genuine level. Walkers and photographers will especially love its characteristic and surprising sights with stepped alleys lined with pastel-colored houses, heritage monuments, churches and fountains adorned with blue-and-white azulejos (glazed ceramic tiles). The riverfront is dedicated to leisure activities and links the zone of Belém with its World Heritage monuments with the modern area of the Parque das Nações.

Due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon has a pleasant climate throughout the year. In September the day-time temperature ranges between 20-27 °C.

Lisbon is easy to get to. It is a short flight away from most European cities, and is just as easily accessible by road, railway or sea. It’s the closest European capital to the US, and Western Europe’s least expensive capital to visit.
